Divorce Books and Resources
Of course no book can replace the Bible when it comes to reading the Word of God but if you are like me you may need a little extra help.
During the separation and after the divorce I felt like I was a complete failure and screw up. How could I have ruined the one thing I wanted all my life? I had a lot of questions. The biggest was "What did I do?" Now if I were to ask my ex I would get plenty of answers that would most likely make me angry:
- You didn't do this...
- You did THAT...
- I don't love you anymore.
- I met someone else.
And the list could go on and on and would really never answer the question of "Why?" Sure there are legitimate reasons for divorce and I am not going to debate anyone on what they are but so often we get stuck in life after a divorce wondering what we did that was so bad. When the simple answer is we live in a world that if full of temptation, sin, and reality can be different for you than it is for me. We are all human and we tend to make mistakes so here is what I had to realize:
- Satan is the true enemy.
- Knowing "why" she did what she did won't solve anything.
- I am not a failure.
- Get on with my life.
There were more important areas of my life I had to concentrate on than chasing my tail trying to find answers and that is where these books come into play. Let me re-emphasize that the following books most likely will not answer your questions about divorce but they may help you to heal and see yourself in a new light. I enjoyed ALL of these books and found them very useful. By now you are probably saying, "Shut up Jason and just tell me what books" so here you go...
Books that helped with understanding divorce
When Storms Come: Discovering Hope in Adversity
- Good book for handling hard times written by Pastor Chuck Smith.
Books that helped with my relationship with God
Why Grace Changes Everything
- This was one of the first books I read and it changed my life. I
have been trying so hard to earn favor with God and was constantly
beating my head against the wall in failure. I love this book and
recommend it to everyone. I used to be able to find it free but
that link is gone so I have it linked to Amazon. Written by Pastor Chuck
Smith.
Managing Your Emotions: Instead of Your Emotions Managing You
- Emotions play such a major role in our lives and when I was going
through the divorce I was a wreck. Learning how to manage emotions
or at least control them a bit better than what I was doing lead me to
more happy days. Written by Joyce Meyers.
The Search For Significance: Seeing Your True Worth Through God's Eyes
- But I am not a failure so why do I think that I am? Good book
for really understanding how God sees you and how you can see yourself
in a new light. Written by Robert McGee.
The Purpose Driven® Life: What on Earth Am I Here For?
- I doubt I need to tell everyone how good this book is but if you
haven't read it, you should. Written by Rick Warren.
Holy Cow!! I am a single parent
The Five Love Languages of Children
- Fantastic book by Gary Chapman and Ross Campbell. Helped me to
understand my little girl and what makes her tick. Now Madalyn is still
quite young so she hasn't quite developed her personality but if you have
children over the age of 5 you should give this book a read.
The Difference a Father Makes: Calling Out the Magnificent Destiny in Your Children
- Written by Ed Tandy McGlasson about the teenage, coming out, for your kids.
I liked the idea and what it had to say.
Supernanny: How to Get the Best From Your Children
- I don't think I need much explanation here, written by Jo Frost. I did
learn that I should not respond to a tantrum with a tantrum.
It is critical to remember that if you have children they will be affected and sometimes your pain interferes with being able to see theirs. Don't neglect their suffering! I found a great website to help with children coping with divorce HERE.
